Likins Residence - Mendocino County
The Likins Property is on a gorgeous wooded site on a hill overlooking the crashing pacific surf. The challenge of this project was the integration of two vastly different and potentially opposing world views and sensibilities - those of Jack (husband) and Paige (wife).
After his retirement as an executive with Matel as head of their Asian operations, Jack was back in the great outdoors, where his love of nature and all things macho could find expression. Paige is a woman of refined sensibilities who amassed a fabulous collection of Asian sculpture on her travels, and wanted the house and grounds to be a fitting context for her treasures. In short - Jack is a mountain man who treasures his old truck and likes to build things when he is not competing in International Senior Water Polo competitions, and Paige is a lady who would have been at home in the Rococco palaces of Eighteenth Century France.
Thus, one of my proudest achievements was the resolution of these diametric sensibilities into an architecture of rugged sensitivity that captured the spirit of this magical coastal enclave, and delivered a place for Paige's art collection and antique furniture as well as a place that made Jack feel at home in the woods.
